Race/Remix: Student Edition – Migration as Practice
Taught by Professor Sama Alshaibi, student podcasts featured in the series approached migration as both lived experience and metaphor. Students explored how movement—across bodies, borders, and time—shapes identity, memory, and belonging. While the scope of the course was global, several student projects centered on the U.S.–Mexico borderlands, reflecting the realities of our region in southern Arizona.
The resulting student edition of Race/Remix brings together sound, image, and story to explore the complexities of migration and identity through experimental, documentary, and hybrid forms.
Using the Racial Justice Studio’s new podcast lab, students worked in groups to produce original multi-episode podcast series. Each group selected a central theme—ecological displacement, myth and memory, speculative futures, or language and transgression—and developed episodes that drew from personal experience and shared inquiry. For many, it was their first time working with professional audio equipment and learning the full production process.
